PLEASE NOTE:

Most of the info on this site was "concieved" in the "old" There days and as such might be obsolete although I'm slowly updating it. I'm working on a new site with updated info. Hope to have it ready for the official opening of the new There.com.

Hardware

Let's start looking at what There recommends themselves (from the main help page of There):

Minimum system requirements:
  • Windows Vista, XP, 2000
  • 256MB RAM
  • 56k Internet connection
  • 500MB free hard disc space
For computers with a CPU speed between 800MHz Pentium III and 2.3GHz, you need the following minimum graphics card requirements:
  • NVIDIA: Any GeForce or better, with 32MB of VRAM
  • ATI: Any ATI Radeon 7200 or better, with 32MB of VRAM
  • Other brands: Any graphics card that supports hardware transform and lighting, with 32MB of RAM
For computers with a CPU speed greater than 2.4GHz, you need the following graphics card requirements:
  • Any DirectX 8 compatible graphics card with 32 MB of VRAM (includes NVIDIA TNT 2, Intel Extreme, Radeon 7000, Radeon IGP, etc.)

But this is by far the only thing to know about making There run better ;) - notice it says minimum requirements! That's an absolute minimum and I can't by any chance recommend any of those numbers!

It will be too big a task for me to tell you what the optimal system would be so please just take this as a guideline - remember - it all comes down to your perception of speed:
  • Get a fast computer - at least 1,5GHz
  • Get lots of ram - at least 1GB - but 2 is even better
  • Get a descent graphic card - you don't need a highend - but at least 256MB RAM. Important is it's not onboard.
  • Get a fast and big hard disc - There is very disc intensive to say the least ;) and over time it consumes a lot of disc space - my current installation takes up more than 4GB !
  • Install There on a second harddrive to keep it off the same disk as the Windows OS system.
